Mike Hooker, a UGA graduate student and biologist working on the long term Middle Georgia bear study, takes a chunk out of the rear foot of the first bear taken in the one day Middle Georgia bear season Saturday. The piece of flesh is a more reliable source of DNA than hair once the bear is dead. The DNA data will be added to the data Hooker and others have collected from living bears over the course of their study.
